In light of recent events and the anticipated downtime, I figure it wouldn't hurt to reach out and see if anyone has a computer strong enough to handle a small temporary server to serve as a gathering place until the inevitable Resurrection of Zion and County.

I'm sure a number of us have considered playing host to such a server, but we simply don't have the hardware to maintain it. Zion, could you tell us what your minimum recommended specs for keeping a server afloat is?

We are not sure what is happening yet. The server may be offline for a few hours, or it may not be offline at all.

In terms of specifications, I would say at least a dual core processor, with around 3GB of RAM, and an internet connection of at least 5Mbps upstream to support a classic and SMP server with 20 slots on each.

Oh, those are surprisingly easy specs. I suppose I can just host servers on my laptop if necessary.

I'm sure you'll keep us updated to the best of your ability, but any kind of heads up would be great if we will end up losing connection to the website and server for more than a short (3 days) while.

I'd do it but I'm in the middle of nowhere with 1.5mb dsl  I guess we'll just see what happens. Lets keep in touch on steam if the server goes down.

I should figure out my steam information..... I haven't had steam in a couple years and dunno if I'll be able to get on again...

As far as internet goes, I'm sitting pretty at 8 ping, 34mb Down, 34mb Up, so I think that'll cover it.

Edit: Fortunately my memory pulled through and I'll be getting steam running shortly.

I think i could be a possibility, however i have never run a server and I don't know how to work the console. If need be, I have a quad core processor, enough RAM and up/down speed.

well, my computer has 1tb of memory space, and 4gb of RAM... i dont know what anything else means but if it comes to that i'd be glad to host the server for a while (as long as someone helps me, as i have absolutely no idea how). hopefully it won't be necessary though ^^

if it does come down to this wouldn't current admins need to have console access and such? Especially if it's done in hawknet's name.

Yeah, I'm not keen on having anyone other than our current admins hosting the server. The hawknet name is copyrighted and if it's used without our permission, you could get into trouble for it.

We would have an alternative instead of downtime, however it comes with lowered bandwidth and the potential for power outages.

Understandable, Although I wasn't imagining a secondary "Hawknet" server. Simply a server that Hawknet users would know about and be available for them to use while Hawknet was unavailable.

The title, HawknetMinor, was more of a functional description rather than a proper definition.

I would rather people with computers specialized for gaming or high end computers take charge for a temporary server host, as a server would run smoother on those types of computers. We'd also need a reliable host that can take care of everybody on the server.
Just my thoughts :P
