this is what i think is up with these ores...

when just digging, no raviene or cave system...
it isnt too likely that you find rare things
i suspect that... the chance of finding coal is about 40/100
iron probably 20-25/100
redstone probably about 20/100
lapis probably 5-10/100
and diamond also about 5-10/100

but i found that bieng in a raviene ups the chances of finding these things
coal 30/100
iron 40/100
redstone 10/100
lapis 10/100 and diamond 10/100

these were my preditions
post what you think about it here...

Hyper massive topic on mining techniques on MinecraftWiki.net

There's actually an algorithm of how ores are generated, and techniques of how to find them with the most efficient mine.

It depends where you're mining.
But it seems with your 2nd estimations, are you including stone in your findings? If you are, there's a larger chance finding all the ores you've listen than actual stone. And are the results recorded lets say iron 40/100. iron being 40, and 100 being stone? I noticed you also had more of a chance finding iron than coal, even putting into consideration that coal is larger in numbers as one, but not in quantity where it can be mined? I highly doubt that it's recorded via chance. That would indicate a 40% chance of hitting iron every time you go to mine. I would like you to edit this with more information regarding your results because what you have hypothesized is quite vague. Perhaps giving us a more brief understanding of your findings may be quite a bit more helpful :D
